CASE STUDY

Community Futures Centre West

We were all in when Community Futures Centre West came to us in mid-2023 to expand their SMARTstart entrepreneurship program throughout Western Canada.

The startup business mentorship program has a proven track record in Airdrie since 2014, and there are a lot more lives to impact in Western Canada.
More people need to know about what SMARTstart does to help rural communities and smaller cities grow and thrive through economic diversification.

That’s where we came in, finding and telling engaging stories that use science to shift behaviour.
I’m in love with telling stories for small businesses.
I (Britton) leaped into running a painting business as a journalism student at SAIT in 2009. I've learned so much from doing and from the people I've met, interviewed and collaborated with since incorporating iEvolve Media (formerly iEvolve Photo) in 2011.

I see the challenges business owners face and how much better their outcomes are when they don't do it alone. These are people's stories of desire and conflict leading to growth that we have the privilege of capturing and sharing.
We won the bid and applied our process learned from an Emmy-winning production company, starting with keywords and story-finding interviews to help find strong characters. They had lots of business owners and mentors with high motivation, uniqueness and desire to set them apart.

We interviewed 10 and narrowed it down to our top four entrepreneurs and one mentor to do the campaign with.
We built out a series of four short (1-3 minute) emotionally moving films to connect local entrepreneurs to the SMARTstart brand and encourage them to take part.
Production was a lot of fun, filming 948 Brewing’s founders, Dave Schroter and Kyle Wudrich, followed by Dr. Michelle Speranza (Core Balance) with her mentor, Tara Pickford, as well as mentor and lawyer, Jo-Anne Yau and Canmore economic development officer, Eleanor Miclette.

We completed the series in time for the first video of Miclette to be debuted in front of a conference of communities from around Western Canada.
The series is encouraging ___ towns to pay to use the programming and spread the impact of giving new entrepreneurs the support they need. I’m thankful to be a part of this Community Futures campaign supporting new businesses.
